With the steady rise of digital activities, digital identity will become even more important in the future. The increased importance of the digital projection of the self brings about a change in identity formation, people’s self reflection and their relationship with others. <lf you're not, where am I?> refers to a loss of the self with regard to the loss of the other, a phenomenon of estrangement which can be observed in the context of digital communication platforms, among them especially social networks. In this case, the estrangement is not focussed on, for example, the loss or abuse of digital data (see catalogue <homo nudus atque apertus>) but on a technically conveyed social relationship that users have with their online partners. The phenomenon of estrangement is haracterized by the fact that the self becomes alienated from itself because utual relationships with others, which are necessary for self-awareness, are prevented. One of the consequences would be that the self loses touch with eality, another one would be a loss of self-awareness, or yet another one would be a lack of sensibility which can lead to an inability to emphasize with ther people, failure to recognize the emotional state of someone else and the incapacity to establish contact by means of appropriate facial expressions and uitable body language. To learn all these things, real people are needed who one can react to and who will in turn react to oneself.
